Credit Unions, Our Time is Now: Digital Meets Mission-Driven Banking

By Todd Clark, CEO, CO-OP Financial Services

Today’s consumer is pushing the envelope, demanding more from the financial institutions with which they deposit, transact and save. Boomers, millennials, Gen Z – regardless of their generational category – want faster, more personalized and more anticipatory experiences that make money matters not only simple, but sometimes even invisible. PwC found a 21-percent increase in consumers who place more importance on experiential factors than they did just three years ago.

Every credit union person – from leaders of small-town cooperatives to CUSO Board Chairs – has the tools it takes to meet those shifting consumer expectations. The collaboration that is characteristic of the credit union movement is chief among those tools. And, at Money 20/20, October 27-30 in Las Vegas, the largest gathering of fintech, payments and financial services organizations in the world, Underground Collision will assemble on the day prior, Saturday, October 26, to both challenge and inspire our industry to meet the demands members have set for us.

The international credit union movement is strong and growing – 260 million people worldwide have recognized the credit union difference and have integrated financial cooperatives within their lives. It’s time we leverage our strengths – cooperative spirit, member-centricity and people helping people philosophy – to fuel the movement’s commitment to digital transformation.

As we know, digital transformation is less about the technology we deliver and more about experiences that technology enables. Credit unions can revolutionize member engagement by rethinking “the way we’ve always done things.” This is one of the most pressing issues facing our industry. CO-OP Financial Services sees it every day in the front and back offices of the credit unions we serve; within our own hallways; and most definitely, at different industry events, including our own THINK 20.

CO-OP is proud to be a part of Underground Collision at Money 20/20, which is intended to drive conversations around digitization, while also staying true to our roots as member-centric financial institutions that do well by doing good. Moderator Tiffany Doty will lead a panel discussion around the ways in which credit unions can turn the challenges of the digital era into opportunities to help people more quickly, conveniently and holistically improve their financial lives.

True to the format of Underground Collision, we’ll spend less time talking about theories and macro concepts and instead focus on real strategies for deepening member relationships and growing the nation’s cooperatives.

Now’s the time to activate the movement and leverage our innate power to build a next-generation credit union ecosystem. We look forward to confronting the “how” of that bold vision on October 26, as well as through the many credit union huddles throughout Money 20/20.

Thank you to Sue Mitchell of Mitchell, Stankovic and Associates and the Underground Collision organizers for creating this outstanding platform to elevate the collective credit union brand and provide even more reasons for us to collaborate on winning strategies for the future. To all credit union people heading to Las Vegas for Money 20/20 – we look forward to meeting up with you and contributing to make our presence as an industry known. It’s going to be an excellent event, and we’re proud to be involved.
